She’s Heeerrrrreeeeeee!

CuteFINALLY!  Miss Stella is here in Maine!  We arrived at the pick up location bright and early.  There was a van out front full of dog crates…I didn’t want to go look in.

We stood in line with all the other anxious dog Mom and Dad’s and watched people get matched up one by one with their new furry friends!  Some of the dogs were clearly very scared, anxious, but that is to be expected considering the ride up from down South.

A few of the dogs were bouncy and were wagging their tails….and then in came Miss Stella….although her previous name was “Leila”….we changed it.  She bounded right into the room, tail wagging and full of that happy puppy energy!  Love at first site!  I don’t know who was happier, her or me!  She drew alot of “Awwwwww!”‘s from the crowd.

We loaded her into the car and Rob drove us home!  Yay

We probably did just about everything they tell you not to do with a new puppy.   We had a very active weekend!  Company in town….a cookout at the house Saturday night….sensory overload for most puppies in new surroundings, but not for Stella!!!

She LOVED it and loved everyone!  She was remarkably calm given what she’s been through.  I can’t say enough about the people from Golden Retreiver Rescue Lifeline, Inc. in Biddeford.  They made this whole process of adopting so easy.  They are hard-working volunteers who go above and beyond to save dogs like Stella, who as a Southern dog would have been put to sleep if not adopted from the shelter in a few days.

We didn’t know what to expect with a dog that we had never seen in person.  Rob was a little nervous about that aspect.  What did we get?  As far as we can tell…..a very sweet, intelligent, gentle and adorable beyond words puppy!

She liked riding in the car, we took her for her first trip into PetCo.  The worst part of her day was a trip in the afternoon to Planet Dog for her first “Brazilian”.  She’s a long haired dog, and has had a little “intestinal issue” which is common for her situation.  Long hair….and puppy “squirts” don’t mix.  Rob paled at the thought of having to clean up her little butt.  So I drove her off to Planet Dog for her first “Sphincter Shave”.  Whhhhhhheeeeeeeee!!!

“Welcome to Maine Stella, now hold still while this nice lady takes an electric razor to your butt!”  She didn’t even flinch…..I would have been screaming to the heavens.  They are super nice at Planet Dog and the groomer was very gentle with her and gave Stella lots of treats!

Back home we went….feeling a littler fresher and lighter!  She was well behaved with all of the company we had!  She had more visitors on Sunday when C&G stopped by to check her out!

Plenty of kisses for everyone!  Lots of snuggling, treats, presents and tummy rubs!

It was commented that she looked so “at home…like she’s always been here!”.   You couldn’t really ask for more.

In trying to keep with not making some of the same “mistakes” I made with Sadie…..we are going to crate her while we eat.  Sadie was a champion begger and was not shy about letting you know she was under the table waiting for you to give her something.  We’re also trying to keep Stella off of the furniture.  I did catch Rob letting up onto his lap while sitting on a chair.  “Bad Rob! Bad!”

We’re also not letting her sleep in the bed with us.  Sadie was an excellent snuggler, but a phenomenal bed hog.  We’re keeping Miss Stella in her crate at night.  She did really well.  A couple of little whines, but nothing like the screeching and howling that we expected.  When we come down in the morning there she is….all nice and quiet just wagging her tail.

We’re still not sure what she exactly is.  Definitely a schauzer mix….mix of what we don’t know.

She’s 23 lbs, has hair instead of fur….and has long, long legs!  She’s all black, but in the sun you can see red highlights underneath the black….she’s got a little patch of white on her chest….and a teeny bit of white on her front right paw.  It’s like she dipped her paw in paint!

She looks bigger than she actually is.  All of that hair covers a skinny little frame.  She’s got long legs, but is not even as tall as my knee.  She has her first vet appt tomorrow and maybe he can tell us more.  We know nothing of her life before she went to the shelter and was rescued.  The woman at GRRL said the previous owners didn’t know they would have to “brush her so much”.  We look at her and can’t believe that someone gave up such a beautiful, smart, loveable dog!

She walked around the Blvd with us on Sunday and was very well behaved.  Later in the day Rob and I walked her around the “hood”.  She loves to run around the house with her stuffed toys….and follows us everywhere.  She (and we) were exhausted after a long weekend of playing.

We’re so happy to have her with us!  Not that we don’t still miss Sadie, but this makes it hurt less!  Rob said yesterday, “There are babies (what we call her stuffed animals) ALL over the house!”  I said, “I KNOW!  Isn’t it awesome?”

We love you Stella!!!!!

Less than 24 Hours til Stella!!!!!

Stella! At this time tomorrow….we’ll have Stella!  Late yesterday they loaded her and a bunch of other dogs into a van for the long drive North.  We meet the rescue people at 9am tomorrow!!!  I have no idea what to expect.

Last weekend I cleaned and bleached out the kennel for her.  Last night I went shopping and got her a little chew toy that you put treats into to entertain her, a waterdish that hooks onto the door of her kennel, a new pretty collar, a little pack of liver treats…yum…liver treats!!!

During the day I got to worrying about what her first weekend would be like.   It’s going to be a busy one.  We have friends in town….people coming over for RibFest Part II Saturday night….not the most mellow of weekends for a little dog who’s been in a van for two days.

In a google search for calming a dog I found this….Doggie Downers:

Comfort Calm

Remember that old skit from the days when Saturday Night Live used to be funny?  Puppy Uppers and Doggie Downers?

Puppy Uppers/Doggie Downers

I’m going to drug her.  Not really drug her….it’s like giving her a cup of SleepyTime tea, but not quite like giving her a capful of Nyquil.  Maybe we won’t need it at all.  Maybe she’ll be tired, but calm and happy.  Happy to be in Maine!  I’m going to bring them with us just in case.

I told Rob my plan when I got home and immediately he snorted, “Uh, do you think Caesar would DRUG a dog?”  Why as a matter of fact ROBERT:

Your “Hero” DOES drug dogs….he also if you have not been in a PetCo or Pet Quarters lately, sells dog food, beds, leashes, shampoos, enough already Caesar…Relax!!!!!

So anywho…that’s my plan…to have the Doggie Downers on hand just in case for her first busy weekend at home and from there go back to good old exhausting her with exercise to get rid of the puppy energy.

I’m super excited!  It’s going to be a great weekend!!!!
