It’s mid-August…which in Maine means summer is finally here. We had rain for all of June….and most of July. We’ve been waiting anxiously for the NICE weather to get here and for things to start blooming in the garden. This is our first house….and we just moved in December 27th. We spent alot of months looking at giant snowbanks, melting snowbanks and brown grass in the backyard. FINALLY everything is green and starting to bloom….so it’s a good opportunity to take photos of Stella outside. And so I can look back at the photos in December….when we’re up to our eyeballs in snow….we can remember what summer was like!!!

Miss Stella Fella Fo Fella Fee Fi Fo Fella had a VERY busy weekend this past weekend! It was her third week with us which is unbelievable because it seems like she’s been here much longer….Rob can give you a countdown in weeks/days/hours/minutes/seconds/nanoseconds. Her biggest accomplishment over the weekend was her new freedom. It was Rob’s idea to remove the barricade on the staircase to upstairs. I KNOW! He felt very confident she could handle it….and as with 47% of the time…he was CORRECT! Maybe he was tired of navigating the barrier made up of a metal folding chair and a cardboard box. Anywho….down the barrier went.
Stella seemed a little dazed and confused…..after three weeks of being told she could not go upstairs….after a couple of gazelle like leaps OVER the barricade….only to be carried back down…she seemed to think we were messing with her.
On a side note….that last photo…her eyes are NOT that freaky….I am just THAT bad at correcting Red Eye….although I do think that it does reflect her surprise at being allowed upstairs.
She’s been handling it quite well. We do keep the bedroom doors closed….to make the upstairs seems not nearly as exciting as it really is.
If you come for a visit…and need to toss a tissue in the trash…it’s not on the floor like in a normal house….the trashcan is up on the hamper….or the countertop, or hanging from the light fixture on the ceiling to discourage a certain four legged someone from picking things out of it.
Another “rule” was broken this past weekend, but we’ll leave that for another posting.
Stella’s other “first” of the weekend was her first grooming. We never had to groom Sadie….she got a couple of baths a year….nails clipped regularly….and regular brushings and ear cleanings. Stella is a whole nother thing.
Sure, her first weekend she got a “Brazilian”, but now she needed a trim…..her hair was getting long…and unless we wanted her to look like Cousin Itt….she needed a trim.
We dropped her off…at a nice local shop….said, “I like her shaggy….she just needs a trim.” They were super nice….very good to her, but this is what we got back……
And although they did follow my instructions and left the majority of her hair……I still was a little shocked at what she looked like with only 1/2 of her hair. She went from this……
They took an electric razor….and buzzed up BETWEEN her eyes!!!!!!!!!!!!! Between them…that’s NOT that much space people. I would show you photos of the other parts that were shaved with an electric razor, but I want to avoid having to keep you from having to check off a box that says you are old enough to enter an “adult” site. AND…because of the breeds of dog that she is….in order to clean her ears….they had to RIP the hairs out of her ear canals. I just about passed out at the thought of it….I can barely pluck my own eyebrows….and they YANKED the hairs out of her ear canals?
On a good note…..they are EXTREMELY nice people….I would highly recommend them. Paws Applause in Scarborough.
As a little P.S………
Today is our third week with Stella! Have I mentioned before how much boundless, wild puppy energy she has? No? Well…..one of her former favorite things to do was to run around in her backyard in crazy circles. Without warning….she would stop her circles and just take off! Wheee!!!! The first time or two she only ran over to the neighbor’s yard and was easily caught when she stopped to sniff around on the porch. THEN….the next time….she took off across the street.
How fun was that? I’m not sure what was more fun for her…the actually crazy running or hearing me running behind her…lungs on the verge of collapsing….saying words that I hoped the neighbors couldn’t hear me saying.
Although the backyard is mostly fenced in…we weren’t sure we wanted to completely fence it. So we bought a dog trolley for our little runaway. Papa installed it for her in a couple of minutes! Yay Papa!!!!
It goes to from the edge of the deck to the back of the yard and she seems to like it. She can run back and forth and can still do her circles. She just can’t scare the bejeezus out of us by running out onto our busy street.
Do you notice what is on the post to the right? Have I told you how my Rob has a “touch” of OCD? He’s not a compulsive handwasher, or an eyebrow hair puller. He’s just very particular and detailed about his projects. He installed a little safety measure to make sure that her leash was always handy when out in the yard. Like the most dangerous of criminals….we walk her on her leash from the house….to the run, hook her to the run while she’s still on her leash….and then…when she is securely fastened to the dog trolley….you take off the leash…..
That way the leash is always nearby. If done properly….there will be no way for her to escape from the backyard again. Unless of course she slides past you on her lightening fast ninja paws as you open the door to go turn the food on the grill…..and she zips by you and you’re left standing in the yard with the bbq tongs in your hand wondering if it is too late to send her back to Louisiana and again quietly saying bad, bad words. Anyway….off on a tangent….back to the trolley. I liked the trolley better than the tie outs that you stake into the ground. Less chance of her getting tangled up. And when we hook her to it while wearing her harness instead of her collar there is no way for her to choke herself.
If Stella were human…..this is who she would be:
